Metropolitan Methodist Hospital is joining the Dallas Cowboys in tackling prostate cancer. Metropolitan Methodist is the official hospital for the Dallas Cowboys Training Camp. The hospital recently set up the da Vinci robot, part of a surgical system that uses a robotic platform to turn complex surgeries into a minimally invasive approach, at training camp.

  • The da Vinci is the "gold standard" for the treatment of prostate cancer. To perform a procedure, the surgeon is seated and carefully watches images from a high-resolution endoscopic camera. He uses the master controls to maneuver four robotic arms. For the patient, a da Vinci procedure offers all the benefits of minimally invasive surgery, including less pain, less blood loss and quicker recovery.

Metropolitan Methodist Hospital has the only da Vinci system in the downtown area. It is used for urological, gynecological, cardiac and gastro-enterological procedures.

The robotic demonstration was a reminder that prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men. The American Cancer Society estimates that one man in six will get prostate cancer during his lifetime. In 2007 Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo revealed that his father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It was caught early, and he has been successfully treated.
