What is electroconvulsive therapy?

Electroconvulsive therapy, commonly known as ECT, is a procedure in which a small amount of electrical current is sent directly to the brain to induce a seizure. These intense therapy sessions are used to affect certain parts of the brain as a way to control appetite, mood or even sleep.

Typically, ECT is used to treat behavioral health patients with depression, mania or schizophrenia who have not responded to more conventional medicinal treatment.

Who may benefit the most from electroconvulsive therapy?

Individuals who may experience success from ECT include:

  • Patients 18 years old and older
  • Patients who experience severe depression, mania or schizophrenia and have not responded or only partially responded to medications and counseling
  • Patients who have had multiple hospitalizations and regress rapidly into crisis
  • Patients who are in need of rapid, definitive response because of the severity of a psychiatric or medical condition
