What to expect after weight loss surgery

Weight loss surgery has benefits and disadvantages, which can vary depending on the patient. Weight loss is possible when combined with proper choices for diet and lifestyle but weight loss surgery should never been seen as a "cure all." Patients are encouraged to gather information, talk with a physician and make an informed decision that best fits your needs.

All patients, regardless of procedures, follow a specialized eating plan post-surgery. Our staff carefully shares your diet progression, ensuring the plan is understood. To prevent pain or serious complications, it's important to follow the plan correctly. This is mandatory for our program. Your schedule will be tailored to your needs and the type of surgery performed.

  • Gastric banding surgery — After completing your initial post-surgery follow-up, you'll need saline injections to maintain the size of the silicone banding.
  • Gastric sleeve surgery — Expect fewer follow-up visits when compared to gastric banding procedure patients.
  • Roux-en-Y procedure — It's common to have irregular bowel movements after surgery. You may also experience a condition known as dumping syndrome. This can happen when foods high in fat and sugar empty too quickly into the small intestine, causing diarrhea, nausea and shakiness.
  • Duodenal Switch- Follow up is very important after this procedure as well as regular lab checks to ensure vitamin levels are adequate. Daily multivitamins high in fat soluble vitamins is mandatory.

Weight loss support group

Your success as a patient is important to us. Support group meetings are a helpful way to get emotional support and encouragement whether you are exploring your options, are a new patient, are a long-term patient or are trying to get back on track to achieve your weight and health goals. Our support group meetings are facilitated by a dietitian and a certified bariatric nurse offering virtual and in-person options. If you would like to learn more about our group, please find us on Facebook at The Art Of Weight Loss and we will send you our announcements.
