Dan Miller

Dan Miller was appointed Chief Executive Officer for Methodist Hospital and Methodist Children’s Hospital in 2018 bringing with him fifteen years of healthcare leadership experience. Prior to joining Methodist Healthcare, Dan held the title of Chief Operating Officer at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado and most recently served as Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Center of Aurora in Colorado.

During his tenure as CEO of The Medical Center of Aurora, Dan was instrumental in championing many successful initiatives such as securing funding for several major expansion projects in addition to a new hospital being constructed to serve the growing population in the region. He also contributed to the organization improving many key metrics and outcomes, leading to a five star rating from CMS, being named Best Regional Hospital by US News and World Report, and receiving a Top General Hospital designation from Leapfrog, one of only 45 hospitals across the country to receive this honor.

Under Dan’s leadership, Methodist Hospital has been named Best Regional Hospital by US News and World Report. He has been efficacious in developing the largest robotics hospital in the nation, having performed the highest volume of cases among any other hospital. In addition, Methodist Hospital has expanded its cardiovascular network and has been recognized as the most comprehensive and largest provider of cardiovascular care in the region, including the largest ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) program in South Texas.

Jane Appleby, MD

Chief Medical Officer, Methodist Hospital

Jane Appleby

Jane Appleby, MD, MBA was appointed Chief Medical Officer for Methodist Hospital in 2014. Prior to joining the hospital executive leadership team, Dr. Appleby was in the role of Chief Quality Officer for Methodist Healthcare. During this time, Methodist Healthcare achieved recognition as a recipient of the Texas Award for Performance Excellence, and Methodist Hospital received the Texas Medical Foundation Health Quality Institute Gold Award.

Dr. Appleby served on regional and state boards and committees primarily dedicated to improving clinical quality and safety in addition to contributing to journal articles, chapters and books. She is a member of the Texas Hospital Association’s Hospital Physician Executive Constituency, serving as Chair of this group in 2013 and 2014, also participating as an Ex-officio Member of the Texas Hospital Association Council on Policy Development during this period. 

Under her leadership as CMO, Dr. Appleby leads the quality team at Methodist Hospital earning recognition by US News and World Report as Best Regional Hospital for high-performance in specialties and procedures. She plays an instrumental role in supporting program development for the hospital to include the Cardiovascular Surgery, Heart Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support, ECMO, ECPR, and Aortic programs. Dr. Appleby also developed and deployed a physician well-being program to address the pervasive issue of physician fatigue.

Lori Townsend, MHA, BSN, CCRN-K

Chief Nursing Officer, Methodist Hospital

Lori Townsend

Lori Townsend, MHA, BSN, CCRN-K was appointed Chief Nursing Officer of Methodist Hospital in 2020. An experienced leader, Lori has served in healthcare for the past 35 years. Since 2017, Lori supported all Perioperative Services, Women’s Services, and Children’s Services as the Chief Nursing Officer for Methodist Children’s Hospital. Prior to joining Methodist Children’s Hospital, Lori worked at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada for 26 years. During her last five years at Sunrise, Lori served as Associate Chief Nursing Officer for the children’s hospital and women’s services.

Lori brings incredible experience and compassion for people, patients, and a dedication for the nursing profession. She has a long history of leading new programs, quality improvement initiatives, and helping team members achieve their clinical and career goals. Lori was instrumental in helping Methodist Children’s Hospital achieve the Level 4 NICU and Level 4 Maternal designation for the state of Texas, which illustrates the highest level of quaternary designation for those services. One of her many passions is ensuring all patients and families have an exceptional experience during their hospitalization. Under her leadership, employee and physician engagement scores year-over-year improved, employee turnover decreased, and the hospital consistently received high patient and family satisfaction scores.

Kevin Scoggin

Chief Operating Officer, Methodist Hospital and Methodist Children’s Hospital

Kevin Scoggin

Kevin Scoggin was appointed Chief Operating Officer for Methodist Hospital and Methodist Children’s Hospital in 2019, bringing with him nearly a decade of healthcare leadership experience. Kevin joined Methodist Healthcare after serving for three years as COO at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center.

During his tenure in Austin, Kevin served as the programmatic development lead for Oncology, Trauma and Cardiovascular services. He also provided executive-level leadership for the Cath Lab, Electrophysiology, Trauma, Imaging, Respiratory Therapy, Facility Operations, Pharmacy, Bone Marrow Transplant Operations and Physician and Provider Relations. In addition to his departmental and programmatic development responsibilities, Kevin also managed a number of projects including a $50-million emergency room and inpatient bed expansion. 

Throughout his career, Kevin served in multiple leadership roles within HCA including COO at Summerville Medical Center near Charleston, South Carolina; Associate COO at Kingwood Medical Center near Houston, Texas; and Administrative Resident & Assistant Administrator at Oklahoma University Medical Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. 

Enrique Bernal

Chief Financial Officer, Methodist Hospital and Methodist Children’s Hospital

Enrique Bernal was appointed Chief Financial Officer for Methodist Hospital and Methodist Children’s Hospital in 2017. Enrique joins the Methodist Healthcare System after serving the past decade as CFO for Sierra Medical Center in El Paso and years prior as CFO for Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, TX.

During his tenure as CFO, Enrique was responsible for all financial oversight including assessment of any financial risk and establishing plans to monitor in order to mitigate. He assisted the CEO to shape strategy and provide the financial acumen in order to meet established business plans and targets. Enrique was successfully responsible for obtaining capital funding for expansion projects and throughout his career negotiated and developed an Air Medical Transport Program, both Ortho and Surgical Navigator Programs, a Transfer Center program for secondary markets, and two Urgent Care centers. Enrique proudly streamlined an O.R. scheduling process and increased physician satisfaction scores by 22%.

Enrique was a member of the Tenet Corporate Audit Steering Committee as well as the Tenet Corporate Revenue Cycle Advisory Council.
