The ER at Methodist Hospital Specialty and Transplant provides expert care for medical emergencies, from broken bones to heart attacks. Our registered nurses and board-certified physicians are specially trained to offer emergency medical services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. About our Forensic Nursing Service (SANE) program

The Forensic Nursing Service department at Methodist Hospital | Specialty and Transplant strives to help victims of sexual assault begin the healing process. Since 1998, Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) have provided care to patients age 13 years old and older that have been a victim of sexual assault, domestic violence and sex trafficking in Bexar County and South Texas.

Located within the ER at Methodist Hospital Specialty and Transplant, SANEs provide care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The SANEs are registered nurses having obtained advanced education with certification in conducting medical-forensic examinations using trauma informed care and providing expert testimony in a court of law. SANEs are also available to speak to groups and organizations within the community.

About our SANE care team

Our nurses offer safe, compassionate and holistic nursing care to empower the patient and help determine their plan of care, which can include:

  • Emotional support using a multi-disciplinary team approach
  • Physical examination
  • Collection of medical-forensic evidence
  • Assistance with reporting the crime to police, when requested (mandatory reporting for children, elderly and vulnerable populations)
  • Assistance with concerns about sexually transmitted infection and pregnancy, offering preventative treatment for sexually transmitted infections and emergency contraception.
  • Assistance with safety planning

Community Referrals for continued support and resources

Forensic Nursing Services at Specialty and Transplant work with 30 plus counties in Central and South Texas. The use of certified SANEs offers the patient a comprehensive medical-forensic examination, leads to an increase in prosecution rates and credible, neutral courtroom testimony. A victim is not required to pay, directly or indirectly, for the cost of the Sexual Assault Forensic Exam. The cost is covered by the Texas Office of the Attorney General.

Do I have to pay for evidence collection?

According to Texas HB 616 Article 56.06, a victim shall have the right to have a forensic medical examination regardless of whether the victim participates in the criminal justice system or cooperates with law enforcement in pursuing prosecution of the underlying crime. A victim shall not be required to pay, directly or indirectly, for the cost of a medical-forensic examination. The cost of a medical-forensic examination shall be paid for by the Texas Office of the Attorney General.

Visiting our emergency room

Our ER is located in the main hospital by the front entrance located directly off of Floyd Curl Drive. We offer a parking garage and a parking lot for patients and visitors. Once you walk through the main ER entrance, please come to our triage window to speak to one of our team members. We will bring you back to a room as soon as one is available.
