Deep brain stimulation
The deep brain stimulation (DBS) program at the Texas Neurosciences Institute, a department of Methodist Hospital, is the number one program in Texas and ranked within the top 10 programs in the U.S. DBS is a surgical treatment option that uses electrical impulses to manage the debilitating symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD), like tremors, rigidity, stiffness, slowed movement and difficulty in walking due to balance problems.
The procedure involves surgically placing electrodes that are attached to a neurostimulator—a pacemaker-like device the size of a stopwatch—in a specific region of the brain. The device sends low-level electrical pulses to the brain, disrupting faulty signals that cause tremors or other movement symptoms.
Nationally recognized stroke care
In addition to receiving a Primary Stroke Center designation from The Joint Commission, Methodist Hospital, the largest provider of stroke care in South Texas, has earned the Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification from DNV GL Healthcare, USA, Inc., one of the leading accrediting agencies in the U.S. Facilities with this certification offer the most advanced stroke treatment available in a given geographic area. The emphasis these programs place on deploying a disciplined management system, combined with the relevant clinical best practices, sets DNV GL stroke-certified programs apart from other programs.
Methodist Hospital participates in Get with the Guidelines®—Stroke, a program sponsored by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. The program focuses on continuous quality improvement and protocols to ensure Methodist Hospital patients receive the best, evidence-based treatment.
Methodist Hospital was also recognized with Get With the Guidelines®—Silver Plus Award with Target: Stroke Honor Roll by providing exceptional patient care.
Emergency care for stroke patients
For many patients, the road to recovery begins when they are transported to Methodist Hospital. All ER nurses are stroke-certified by the National Institutes of Health and can administer tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) with physicians’ orders.
For stroke or brain injury patients, the moment the Methodist AirCare helicopter—a state-of-the-art emergency medical transport helicopter touches down, the medical crew aboard is ready to immediately begin administering an intensive level of medical care based on the specific needs of the patient, especially patients in rural communities who require a higher level of care.
Methodist AirCare maintains full accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems.
On-site neurological imaging services
Specialized equipment and trained staff are available 24/7 for radiology procedures to include:
- Computed tomography (CT) scan
- Computer tomography angiography (CTA)
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA)
- Gamma Knife® stereotactic radiosurgery
Methodist Hospital is home to the first Gamma Knife® Center in South Texas. Gamma Knife® radiosurgery delivers a targeted dose of radiation to the brain with extreme surgical precision. Gamma Knife® is the most accepted and widely used radiosurgery treatment in the world.
Gamma Knife® is used in combination with advanced imaging, such as MRI, CT or angiography, which allows your physician to deliver localized, precise radiation. This treatment helps to spare surrounding, healthy tissues, while effectively treating tumors or vascular malformations with radiation.
