Spurs forward Sandro Mamukelashvili highlights the role of Child Life Specialists
San Antonio, Texas – In recognition of Child Life Month, Spurs forward Sandro Mamukelashvili visited Methodist Children's Hospital to engage with young patients and highlight the essential work of Child Life Specialists. This immersive experience underscored the vital role of Child Life Specialists in enhancing the hospital experience for children and created special memories for all in the visit, including his surprise gifting of a PlayStation 5 (PS5) to one of these patients.
During his visit, Mamukelashvili shadowed Child Life Specialists by rounding with patients, checking in on them and spending quality time interacting with the young patients, bringing smiles and comfort. He participated in IV education to dispel misconceptions about IVs and needles, helping to alleviate fears surrounding medical procedures. The visit also included a music therapy session where Mamukelashvili sang and played instruments with the children.
Additionally, he engaged in video gaming activities, which provided a sense of normalcy in the hospital environment. Mamukelashvili added his own competitive flair by promising the young gamer a brand new PS5 if he were to place in the top 15 players. After the patient not only scored in the top 15 but placed number one overall, Mamukelashvili made good on his promise and had a PS5 delivered later that day.
