What to bring to your child’s surgery

During your child's stay with us, we want to make sure he or she is as comfortable as possible. As you're preparing for your child's surgery, we recommend bringing the following items:

  • Comfortable clothes, pajamas, slippers and socks
  • A blanket or stuffed animal
  • Snacks, with doctor’s permission
  • Toys, video games and board games
  • Music, movies, books and magazines
  • Pictures of friends and family

Pre-operative tours

We also offer pre-operative tours for children and their parents. During our tour, we will visit the different areas of the hospital your child will encounter on the day of the surgery. Our tours help to:

  • Familiarize patients with the experiences and people and they will encounter on surgery day
  • Ease anxiety or fears you or your child may be feeling
  • Answer questions and clarify misconceptions
  • Develop trust in hospital staff

To schedule a pre-operative tour, call our Child Life Department at (210) 575-7399.

Directions to the surgery center

We are located on the second floor of the children's tower. You can park in Garage 2 or use our valet service. We recommend getting to the surgery center two hours prior to your child's procedure. Make sure your child follows the specific instructions outlined by the surgeon before the surgery.
