A second chance: Journey through Cardiac Rehab at Methodist Hospital Hill County

Patient story highlighting Methodist Hospital Hill County.

February 26, 2025

Jonathan Godfrey, 79, walked five miles a day and led what he believed to be a healthy lifestyle. He never thought he would face a heart attack—let alone two, just weeks apart. A dedicated husband, and active member of his community, he had always considered himself relatively healthy. But life had other plans.

“The first one was a shock,” Jonathan recalled. “I thought I was out of the woods, but then it happened again.”

Just weeks after Jonathan had stents placed, his wife, Sharla found him unresponsive and dialed 911. He was rushed to Methodist Hospital Hill Country and found himself relying on the expertise, compassion, and support of the hospital’s team. “The staff didn’t just save my life — they gave me hope,” he said. “After my second heart attack, I was scared. I didn’t know if I’d ever get back to normal, but they assured me I wasn’t alone in this fight.”

The Road to Recovery

Surviving two heart attacks was only part of the battle. The real challenge is regaining strength, confidence, and a sense of control over your health. That’s where Methodist Hospital Hill Country’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program became a lifeline for Jonathan. At first, he was hesitant. Would his heart be strong enough to handle rehab? Would he ever feel like himself again? But the moment he stepped into the program, his fears began to fade.

“The team at cardiac rehab understood what I was going through, both physically and mentally,” Jonathan said. “They pushed me at the right pace, teaching me how to strengthen my heart while also giving me the confidence to trust it again. “Through guided exercise, education on heart health, and constant encouragement from the rehab team, Jonathan slowly, but surely, rebuilt his strength. Each session brought him closer to his goal—not just survival, but a thriving, healthy life.

A New Way Forward

Today, Jonathan is back home after finishing his rehab and is sticking to his home exercise program. He’s enjoying quality time with his wife, staying active, and looking forward to the warmer weather so he can resume his walking routine.

According to the American Heart Association’s 2025 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Update, heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the U.S. Jonathan’s story is a powerful reminder that recognizing symptoms, seeking timely medical attention, and committing to rehab can save lives.

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that you can’t take your heart for granted,” he said. “I thought I had more time, but my heart attacks taught me that change starts now.” Jonathan’s message to others is clear: listen to your body, take preventative care seriously, and never ignore the warning signs.

Thanks to the dedicated care at Methodist Hospital | Hill Country, Dr. Matthew Jepsson, and their cardiac rehab team, he’s not just living — he’s living with purpose, proof that even after two heart attacks, recovery and renewal are possible.
