Darlene Funk

NICU Director

“It is a privilege to create a healing environment for stressed families that come into our facility not expecting to visit us. Our goal is to make sure that by the time these families leave us, they feel happy and confident caring for their babies.”

The birth of a baby is a wonderful yet very complex process. Newborn babies that need help transitioning into normal newborn life are admitted into a special area of the hospital called NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). Most babies admitted into NICU are either premature (born before 37 weeks of pregnancy), have low birth weight (less than 5.5 pounds), or have a medical condition that requires particular care.

At Methodist Stone Oak Hospital, our 9-bed Level 3A NICU combines advanced technology and trained healthcare professionals to provide expert care tailored to the needs of the newborn. Inside our state of the art facility your newborn will be under the care of a dedicated team of registered nurses, neonatologists, and a 24-hour on-site nurse practitioner.

Although the environment in the NICU can be intimidating, our team strives to make each family’s stay in as comforting as possible. Family-centered care is supported and encouraged in our NICU. Family members are encouraged to visit and remain active throughout the duration of their newborns stay.

Our NICU treats 20-30 high-risk newborns per month. As a team, our goal is to educate newborn parents by putting together a strategy we call “Flight Plan Home.” Flight Plan Home is designed to help parents feel confident and comfortable caring for their newborn during their stay at the hospital and after they leave.
