Two hearts, one gift: Daughter donates kidney to her father

“If I had more kidneys to donate, I would do it all over again, even for strangers,” said Itzel Guzman. “I’m happier and healthier now. The process was smooth, and the hospital staff made everything worth it.”

In May 2024, Itzel, a devoted daughter, donated a kidney to her father, Juan Guzman. It all started back in September 2022, when Juan, who had been living with untreated diabetes for years, began experiencing severe symptoms. Symptoms included blurry vision, shakes, excessive sweating, weakness, and leg cramps. Initially, these symptoms didn’t seem to concern him much. However, his condition worsened over time, and a visit to the hospital revealed the diagnosis: Juan was in stage 5 kidney failure.

The doctors put Juan on dialysis, and his prognosis became uncertain. It was then that he was placed on the transplant list, though Itzel had no doubt in her mind she wanted to be his donor. Itzel was tested, and to her relief, she was a match. Her dad was overwhelmed with gratitude when he learned that his daughter would be donating one of her kidneys to him.

Throughout the entire transplant process, Itzel was guided and supported by caring staff, particularly Oscar Nava, a transplant coordinator. Oscar answered all her questions and helped her navigate the transplant process.

Itzel vividly recalls how devastated she felt when she first learned of her father’s condition. She experienced sleepless nights and often stayed with him in the hospital, unsure where to begin or how to help. She spoke with her family about wanting to donate her kidney, and everyone supported her decision. Itzel felt that the entire experience brought the family closer together and served as a wake-up call to take better care of their health.

Dr. Luke Shen, the transplant surgeon, stood out to Itzel. His skill and care made a significant difference, and her father’s recovery was nothing short of extraordinary. Within days, Juan was up and walking around, full of life once again. On the opposite end, Itzel’s recovery was a bit difficult. While she recovered physically fairly quickly and was walking within weeks, the weeks of recovery in bed were challenging from a mental standpoint. Despite the mental hurdles, Itzel has no regrets.

Reflecting on her post-donation life, Itzel says her experience has made her more active, more conscious about drinking water, and more committed to making healthy decisions. She encourages others who are considering kidney donation to take that first step. “It’s a fulfilling experience. It’s life-changing, not just for me, but for the recipient. It’s worth it, no matter how long the process takes.”

“I feel better and normal again,” Juan says today. His life has changed dramatically for the better. He follows a healthy lifestyle, eating more vegetables and drinking plenty of water.
