Rolando Ramos
Lawyer gets his life back after suffering from knee pain.
Rolando Ramos, managing partner of The Law Office of Ramos & del Cueto, is a busy father of three who loves to spend time with his college-aged children, travel and work out. Quality time with family and friends took a big hit when his knees started giving him trouble. He was in so much pain at one point that he was declining invitations to all events and vacations.
“Cowboys games, Spurs games, a trip to Costa Rica, I turned it all down because I couldn’t walk very far. And my pride wouldn’t let me use a cane or walker,” said Ramos. “Dad’s weekend at my daughter’s college campus — I couldn’t go to all the events and activities because of my knees. That was hard.”
The San Antonio-based lawyer said he struggled with knee pain for several years. It affected his quality of life. He remembered how the team at his law office would drop him off at the courthouse, because they knew he couldn’t walk from the parking lot. He finally decided to do something about it. Doctors diagnosed him with macerated meniscus in both knees; the cartilage was gone.
Ramos said picking Texsan for his surgery was a no-brainer, because of the positive reviews online and its reputation for not only being a specialized heart hospital but also an orthopedic hospital. Dr. Richard Steffen, an orthopedic surgeon with the Joint Replacement Center at Methodist Hospital Texsan, was ready to help.
“It’s always hard to see patients like Mr. Ramos living with such pain,” said Dr. Steffen. “We tried a few non-surgical options like cortisone injections, but it didn’t help relieve the pain. We performed two knee replacements for him at different times, and the results completely changed his life.”
Ramos had his first knee replacement in January of 2020. He came back in April of 2021 to have his other knee replaced. Ramos shared that the experience, from registration to pre-op, surgery, and recovery was seamless. The team had him up walking short laps the same day as his surgery. And he couldn’t say enough about how they staff treated their patients.
“I remember being there at Texsan, and it started hailing,” said Ramos. “The nurse said she hoped it didn’t damage her car. Then she asked me if I wanted some Jell-O. She was more concerned about me than her car. The staff put their lives aside to dedicate themselves to patient care. That really stood out to me.”
Ramos was back to work two weeks after surgery. He had the knee pillow the staff gave him to use when he needed to take a break. He’s back to exercising and looking forward to the future.
“I booked a trip to Las Vegas for my daughter’s birthday,” said Ramos. “I’m so excited to have this quality of life back.”
