Methodist Hospital has been cited by Forbes for being in the top five percent of hospitals in the country in preventing mortality and complications. The article recognized the hospital’s unusually low mortality and complication rates for 26 different procedures and diagnoses. These include treatment for heart failure, pneumonia, stroke, hip and knee replacement operations, back surgery and stent procedures. The Methodist Hospital listing in the HealthGrades study includes Methodist Hospital, Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital, Northeast Methodist Hospital and Metropolitan Methodist Hospital.

HealthGrades, a hospital rating company, singled out Methodist Hospital as one of 269 hospitals across the country based on data from 40 million patients on Medicare who were hospitalized between 2006 and 2008. These hospitals have a 29 percent lower mortality rate and nine percent lower complication rate compared with all other hospitals.

Regional hospitals, like Methodist Hospital, were heavily represented in the HealthGrades study. HealthGrades noted that prestigious academic centers, that were notably absent from the list, tend to build a reputation on cutting-edge research and excelling at the unusual. They may not always excel at less glamorous basic procedures and treatments.
