San Antonio, TX   The year 2023 marks the 50th anniversary since Methodist Hospital | Specialty and Transplant first opened its doors for service. In 1973, the hospital was known as Community Hospital and later became Methodist Hospital | Specialty and Transplant. The 383-bed facility is a full-service hospital that is widely acclaimed for its outstanding abdominal transplant program as well as its unique programmatic specialty surgery program.

To visually reflect the excellent care provided, Methodist Hospital | Specialty and Transplant is proud to undergo an extensive remodeling of the façade expected to be completed this Fall. Over the span of five decades, the hospital has achieved many milestones, such as ranking within the top quartile in the nation for patient experience.

One of the most significant achievements has been the growth of the kidney transplant program. Established in 1984, the program is known to be the largest living donor kidney program and the largest Hispanic kidney transplant program in the nation. United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) recognized the kidney transplant program at as the Nation’s only transplant program in history to perform more than 200 living donor and more than 200 deceased donor kidney transplants in 2021.

As one of the only hospitals in San Antonio to offer Behavioral Health Services, we have been committed to addressing the growing emotional needs of our community. This year, we expanded our services to assist the Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) department. The hospital also occupies the only Adult SANE (sexual assault nurse examiners) program in South Texas.

“Today marks a significant milestone in the history of our hospital and I am extremely proud to share it with our team members and physicians across the organization,” said Kevin Scoggin, CEO of Methodist Hospital | Specialty and Transplant.  “It has been our honor to serve the greater San Antonio community, as well as patients from around the country, for the past 50 years.”
