Methodist Hospital Stone Oak is pleased to announce that Judy Tan Shumway, DO, MPH, FACP, SFHM, has been appointed as Chief Medical Officer (CMO). Dr. Shumway joins Methodist Hospital Stone Oak from University Health where she served as Senior Vice President of Clinical Services.

During her tenure at University Health, Dr. Shumway provided oversight of quality, patient safety, accreditation, and regulatory compliance. She promoted interdisciplinary teamwork, physician engagement, and alignment in hospital goals. Dr. Shumway also led a strategic focus on mortality rate reduction resulting in University Health’s 2022 achievement of Top Decile Performance within the Premier cohort of hospitals.

Prior to her time at University Health, Dr. Shumway served as the West Regional Medical Director for TeamHealth where she led Hospitalist Medicine practices in seven locations across Texas to achieve high-performing outcomes through improvements in quality, efficiency, and effective communication. She provided operational leadership for multiple medical directors with oversight of performance outcomes in hospital services as well as performance improvement plans. While serving as Regional Medical Director and Director of Operations for the San Antonio Region, Dr. Shumway directed clinical operations for eight Hospital Medicine practices within Methodist Healthcare System, Baptist Health System, and Southwest General Hospital, including a subspecialty Neurology Hospitalist group. During the integration of IPC in TeamHealth, she led initiatives to improve performance in hospital quality measures, resource utilization, patient experience, and patient throughput. Dr. Shumway held several Medical Director positions throughout Texas since 2009, beginning as Practice Group Medical Director at Methodist Hospital Stone Oak.

An accomplished professional, Dr. Shumway has been named Top Hospitalist by American College of Physicians, as well as Hospitalist of the Year by IPC The Hospitalist Company. She is also a Member of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement and completed an Executive Coaching certification at the Hudson Institute of Coaching to enhance effectiveness in developing other future leaders.

Dr. Shumway earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from The University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, and a Master of Public Health from The George Washington University in Washington, DC. She received a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California.

Dr. Shumway will assume her role as CMO effective September 11, 2023.
