PDCA cycle: decreasing Foley insertion in the emergency department

Methodist Texsan ED, under the advice of the ED Clinical Services Group at HCA and Danny Chung, MSN, RN, CIC developed a plan to decrease Foley insertions in our ED.

As of February 2018, we have consistently had an 80% reduction in Foley insertions from our baseline data. This is an incredible accomplishment for the ED Team at Texsan earned the team local and national recognition as a best practice.

I believe

Improving patient experiences

Inter-professional teams, including Patient Experience Champions, across Methodist Texsan spent numerous hours to develop key tactics to fully realize our fabulous trends in 2018. This impact was a result of instituting Safety Rounds, Nurse Leader Rounding, Discharge Call Backs, and “hiring right” into our daily practice. Rewarding and recognizing nurses is another tactic used to reach exceptional patient experience scores.
