Minimally invasive surgery

Methodist Hospital Metropolitan’s orthopedic surgeons have access to some of the latest in surgical technology. Our team uses computer navigation and robotic-assisted surgery to guide orthopedic surgeons in real-time through a three-dimensional view of the patient’s knee joint. This kind of technology enables surgeons to be incredible precise during a knee procedure, ultimately leading to the possibility of shorter hospital stays or faster recovery times for patients.

Surgical intensive care unit (ICU)

Our surgical ICU is designed for patients recovering from surgery. Each patient room is fully equipped to meet your needs. In addition, we have positioned our nurses’ stations between every two rooms to ensure the most efficient care for our patients. Our board-certified critical care doctors are available 24/7 for our patients recovering from surgery.

Dedicated program for joint replacements

The Joint Replacement Center is a dedicated inpatient center for elective joint replacement surgeries, conveniently located on our hospital campus. By focusing exclusively on hip and knee replacement surgeries, our expert, multidisciplinary team gives you the specialized care you deserve.

The goal of joint replacement surgery is to relieve your pain, restore your independence and return you to an active lifestyle as quickly as possible. We are dedicated to making sure you have the preparation, education, support and coordinated care necessary for the best possible long-term result.

Patient education

Our commitment to patient education sets our center apart. When you have more knowledge about the process of joint replacement surgery, you'll have better results afterward. We want you to have the best possible outcome, including less pain and a return to previous activity levels. Being properly prepared is one reason you are more likely to return home the day after surgery.

We know how important it is for you and your coach to be engaged in the preparation process before surgery. Your coach is a family member or friend who will help and support you while recovering from knee or hip replacement surgery. If you have an involved coach, you're more likely to do better after surgery and have better results. We encourage you to bring your coach to our presurgical class, physical therapy sessions after surgery and discharge planning meetings before going home.

Preparing you for surgery

The presurgical patient education class gives you all the information to have successful joint replacement surgery. The course is led by one of our joint replacement nurses and one of our physical therapists. You will receive materials to take home, and you and your coach will be able to ask questions. In the class, we cover:

  • What arthritis is, and how joint replacement surgery helps
  • How to get yourself ready for surgery, including preoperative exercises to help you get in the best physical condition possible
  • How to prepare your home to support a safe recovery after surgery
  • What to bring to the hospital
  • What to expect in the hospital
  • What safety equipment and assistive devices you’ll need after surgery and how to get them
  • The role of discharge planning in surgical success

On the day you attend our joint replacement class, you can also:

  • Preregister for your surgery
  • Complete preoperative forms
  • Get your preadmission testing done (appointment required)

Throughout the process, our team is here to help you get the best possible results from your joint replacement surgery, so you can get back to your everyday life.
