Shailesh Kadakia, M.D. began his career in medicine at the urging of his father, who instilled high hopes in each of his children. Dr. Kadakia found his calling in medicine and more particularly, gastroenterology, a field that he has come to appreciate for its diverse nature, "I get to interact with wonderful patients," he says, "and perform procedures that help diagnose and treat a variety of diseases and conditions." Before Dr. Kadakia settled into private practice, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Boston an affiliate of Yale University Medical School, and went on to complete his Fellowship in Gastroenterology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. His career took him to San Francisco, and finally here to San Antonio, where he served as the department chair at the Brooke Army Medical Center for more than 30 years, training fellows and publishing more than 50 peer-reviewed articles on important topics in gastrointestinal medicine. When asked what he loves most about practicing medicine, Dr. Kadakia says, "Educating my patients. Teaching them how to take care of their health, prevent disease, and embrace a lifestyle that will ensure the best quality of life." When Dr. Kadakia finds a little time for himself, he likes to hike, exploring this nation's national parks, and take trips to around the globe, naming India, Thailand, Mexico, and Hawaii among his favorite destinations.
