Methodist Healthcare was cited for best practices in leadership and strategy

SAN ANTONIO, TX. November 17, 2017 – U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has recognized Methodist Healthcare for best practices in two criteria categories of the 2017 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s highest Presidential honor for performance excellence. The award recognizes the organization’s commitment to sustainable excellence through innovation, improvement and visionary leadership.

Baldrige award judges cited Methodist Healthcare for best practices in the Leadership and Strategy categories. Methodist Healthcare is one of only four organizations to receive best practices recognition this year.

“Receiving this recognition from the Baldrige Award judges reaffirms our mission of Serving Humanity to Honor God by providing exceptional and cost-effective health care accessible to all,” said Jaime Wesolowski, President and CEO of Methodist Healthcare. “Methodist Healthcare has evolved to meet the growing needs of San Antonio and South Texas, but our commitment since opening our first hospital in 1963 remains true: to continuously improve the health and wellness of our community.”

Methodist Healthcare is the largest health care provider in South Texas with 27 facilities, including nine acute care hospitals serving more than 80,000 inpatients and 350,000 outpatients annually.

Methodist Healthcare is recognized as the most respected and preferred health care provider in the region. Recent honors and recognition include:

  • Five of the seven eligible Methodist Healthcare hospitals received “A” grades from the Leapfrog Group, a national patient safety watchdog. Receiving an “A” grade in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades means these hospitals rank among the safest hospitals in the United States.
  • Medicare.gov’s “Hospital Compare” named Methodist Stone Oak Hospital a Five-Star Hospital. Hospital Compare provides information about the quality of care at over 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals nationwide. Methodist Stone Oak Hospital ranked sixth in the entire nation and was the only five-star hospital in San Antonio. All other Methodist Healthcare hospitals received four stars, reserved for the top 20 percent of U.S. hospitals.
  • All Methodist Healthcare hospitals were recently designated as Top Performers by the Joint Commission. No other acute care hospitals in San Antonio were given this distinctive quality designation.
  • Methodist Texsan Hospital, Methodist Ambulatory Surgical Hospital and Metropolitan Methodist Hospital are among Modern Healthcare Magazine’s Best Places to Work in Healthcare for 2017. They are the only San Antonio hospitals and three of 150 health care entities in the nation to receive this distinction.

“We strive to be a world-class health care provider at every level,” Wesolowski said. “What truly makes Methodist Healthcare different is our people—a team of compassionate and dedicated health care professionals. We have earned this national best practices recognition because each of our employees, physicians, volunteers and board members are committed to our mission and our standards of behavior. They live by the Methodist Excellence Promise, which is to always remember why we are here. This means that everyone who enters any of the Methodist Healthcare facilities expects, and receives, quality care, compassion and respect.”

“Excellence is a journey, not a destination,” said Wesolowski. “Our commitment to excellence establishes best practices that save lives.”

The Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) manages the Baldrige Award in cooperation with the private sector. An independent board of examiners recommended this year’s Baldrige Award recipients and best practices honorees.
