SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS December 8, 2017 – Highlighting its nationally recognized achievements in patient safety and quality, Metropolitan Methodist Hospital, a campus of Methodist Hospital, was named a Top General Hospital by The Leapfrog Group.  This the first time that a San Antonio area hospital has been named to the Top General Hospital list since the award program began in 2006.  Announced today, the Leapfrog Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive honors American hospitals can receive. The Top Hospital designation is awarded by The Leapfrog Group, an independent hospital watchdog organization.

“We are honored by this important national recognition,” said Greg Seiler, CEO, Metropolitan Methodist Hospital.  “Leapfrog is considered the Consumer Reports of health care, and their criteria are rigorous. We take pride in being nationally recognized as the top quality hospital in San Antonio and in the overall excellence we have demonstrated when compared with our peers locally and nationally.

“We take particular pride in the high quality care we deliver to our neighbors and residents in the center city and the neighborhoods surrounding the Pearl Complex and Alamo Heights neighborhoods,” he said. “We strive each and every day to deliver exceptional care to the diverse neighborhoods and businesses we serve.   It is rewarding to have our efforts recognized and this recognition further reinforces the commitment of everyone on our team to the highest standards of care.”

Metropolitan Methodist Hospital is the only San Antonio hospital to receive this accomplishment and one of only three Texas hospitals that were named Top General Hospital for 2017.   Forty-five hospitals achieved the award across the country. Earlier this year, the Metropolitan Methodist Hospital earned an “A” grade in the 2017 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, which assigns letter grades of A, B, C, D and F to hospitals nationwide based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms.

Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the Top Hospital award, including infection rates, maternity care, and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology.

“We are proud to recognize Metropolitan Methodist Hospital as a 2017 Leapfrog Top Hospital. This demonstrates extraordinary dedication to patients and the local community. The entire staff and board deserve praise for putting quality first and achieving results,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of Leapfrog.

To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must submit a Leapfrog Hospital Survey.  To see the full list of institutions honored as 2017 Top Hospitals, visit www.leapfroggroup.org/tophospitals.

Methodist Healthcare System hospitals also ranked high in the Fall 2017 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades.  The Safety Grade assigns letter grades of A, B, C, D and F to hospitals nationwide based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms. Methodist Hospital, Methodist Children’s Hospital, Metropolitan Methodist Hospital, Northeast Methodist Hospital and Methodist Hospital Atascosa* all earned “A” grades. They were the only San Antonio hospitals receiving the “A” score and were among 832 hospitals across the nation receiving the A grade.
