On June 16, Metropolitan Methodist Hospital, a campus of Methodist Hospital, hosted the competition robotics team, The E-lemon-ators, from Vanguard Christian School in Boerne, TX. The students came to learn about robotic surgery and the DaVinci robot. They were treated to a presentation by Intuitive representative, Kyle Smith, who shared the past, present, and future of robotic surgery. David Cantu, Metropolitan Methodist surgical tech, started the visit to the operating room with a gowning and gloving workshop. Metropolitan Methodist robot coordinator, Victoria Villegas, put the team through drills on the robot challenging them to utilize the robot to suture an artificial organ. The visit culminated in a skills competition on the robotic simulator between the students and Metropolitan Methodist robotic surgeon, Dr. Kathy Grove. The students walked away with a greater understanding of the engineering that goes into creating a complex medical device and a greater appreciation of the inner workings of an operating room.
